Public Safety Warning About Suspicious Items
Important safety reminder from the RCMP:
- Do not touch, move, or open any suspicious packages or items found outdoors or in public places.
- Items connected to the drug trade may contain or be contaminated with dangerous substances, which can pose serious health risks, including accidental exposure to potent drugs.
- If you see something that appears out of place or concerning, keep a safe distance and contact police immediately rather than handling it yourself.
The RCMP investigation into both incidents is ongoing.
CrimeCanada.ca Safety Perspective
From the perspective of CrimeCanada.ca, these seizures highlight the real presence and impact of illicit drugs within the Yukon community, particularly in and around Whitehorse. Taking approximately one kilogram of suspected cocaine and additional quantities of suspected crack cocaine out of circulation may prevent related violence, property crime, and overdoses. Community awareness and cooperation are crucial in supporting these efforts.
Residents can help strengthen local safety by remaining alert to unusual packages, activity around wooded or secluded areas, and suspected drug trafficking. Without putting themselves at risk, citizens should promptly report suspicious activity to the RCMP Crime Reduction Unit at 867-667-5555 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). By sharing information and avoiding direct contact with unknown substances, the public plays an essential role in limiting the harms associated with the illegal drug trade in Yukon.
