CrimeCanada.ca Safety Perspective

From the perspective of CrimeCanada.ca, an assault with a weapon at a popular recreation area such as Mount Sima is a serious concern for the Yukon community, even when police assess the event as isolated. Public ski hills, arenas, and sports venues are shared spaces where youth and families gather; when violence occurs in these environments, it can affect people’s sense of safety and trust in these community hubs.

While police report there is no ongoing threat to the public, this incident is a reminder to stay aware of your surroundings when attending busy recreational sites. If you witness escalating disputes, weapons, or threatening behaviour, prioritize your safety by moving to a secure area and contacting police or on-site staff as soon as it is safe to do so. Timely reporting of concerning activity—whether directly to Whitehorse RCMP (867-667-5555) or anonymously through Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477)—helps prevent further harm and supports a safer, more vigilant community across Yukon.
