Warning in effect

A potato harvester picked up a second suspected mortar from a farm field in Slemon Park, near North Bedeque, P.E.I., on the evening of October 28, 2026. It was the second time that week police were called to the area for military ordnance, according to the Prince Edward Island RCMP.

Two finds on the same farm

Police said East Prince RCMP first responded on October 27 at 10 a.m., after what appeared to be a mortar was collected by a potato harvester. It was discovered while that load of potatoes was being unloaded. The Department of National Defence was brought in and collected the mortar later that day.

The next day, October 28, at 6:30 p.m., police were called back to the same farm when a second apparent mortar was picked up by a potato harvester. The RCMP said the Department of National Defence was contacted again to deal with the ordnance.

Former military base land

Both items were found in a field that used to be part of the military base in Slemon Park, police said. According to the RCMP, the base was decommissioned in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The field has been used for farming for many years since then. Police said it was rented this year by the farmer who uncovered the two ordnances.

The RCMP said any further concerns about this field will have to be handled by the property owner together with the Department of National Defence.
