Community Alert: Airdrie RCMP Warn of Nationwide Phone Upgrade Scam Targeting Canadians

On March 27, 2026, the Airdrie RCMP Special Investigations Unit – General Investigation Section issued a warning about a sophisticated phone scam operating across Canada. Fraudsters are posing as legitimate Canadian telecommunications companies and convincing victims to agree to what appears to be an attractive cell phone upgrade offer.

The scam is impacting residents in and beyond Airdrie, Alberta, and involves convincing victims to order new devices through what seems to be their legitimate phone accounts, then redirecting those devices to fraud operators. The calls often sound professional and convincing, making it critical for residents to verify any unsolicited upgrade offers directly with their real provider.

How the Phone Upgrade Scam Works

According to the official information, victims are contacted by scammers who claim to represent well-known Canadian phone companies. The fraudsters:

  • Initiate cold calls and present themselves as representatives of a telecommunications provider offering a device upgrade or special deal.
  • Provide fake employee names and may allow the victim to speak with a supposed “supervisor” to increase credibility.
  • Encourage victims to order a new phone, often through their actual provider’s official app or online account, based on details shared during the call.
  • In some cases, take control of the victim’s phone app account by collecting personal information during the conversation.
  • Send emails that include stolen corporate logos to make the communication appear genuine.

Once the new phone is delivered to the victim, the scammers call back and claim the wrong device was shipped. They then instruct the victim to send the device to a “return facility,” which is in reality a private Canadian address linked to the fraudulent operation. The device is then trafficked or resold, leaving the legitimate account holder and the real phone company to deal with the financial loss.

Recent Arrest in Airdrie

On January 8, 2026, Airdrie RCMP arrested a 19-year-old resident of Airdrie alleged to be connected to one of these false “return facility” addresses. This individual is accused of receiving and handling fraudulently obtained electronic devices sent by victims who believed they were returning phones to their provider.

The accused is facing the following charges:

  • Trafficking property obtained by crime (over $5,000)
  • Using the mail service to transmit packages containing fraudulently obtained electronic devices

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Airdrie on April 23, 2026.

How to Protect Yourself from Phone Upgrade Scams

The Airdrie RCMP are urging residents to be extremely cautious when receiving unsolicited calls about device upgrades. To reduce your risk of becoming a victim:

  • Do not agree to any new phone, device upgrade, or account change based solely on an incoming call, even if it appears professional.
  • Do not rely on phone numbers, email addresses, or links provided by the caller.
  • Independently look up your phone company’s official customer service contact using its legitimate website, your billing statement, or the official app.
  • Hang up, then call your provider back using this independently verified contact information to confirm whether any offer or upgrade is real.
