Alberta Safety Alert: National Water Safety Tips Released

Learn crucial water safety tips from the RCMP during National Drowning Prevention Week in Alberta.

Crime Canada newsroomPublished

As part of National Drowning Prevention Week, happening from July 19 to 25, 2026, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Alberta releases vital safety guidelines to prevent water-related incidents. This coincides with World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25. This year's theme, “Safety starts with being Water Smart,” emphasizes the responsibility of every individual to practice caution when near water. Each year, over 400 Canadians lose their lives in preventable water accidents, highlighting the need for awareness.

The RCMP advises all Canadians to observe these crucial water safety tips: wearing a lifejacket, supervising children and non-swimmers, and staying sober around water. Additionally, individuals are urged to always swim with company, be aware of water conditions, know how to swim, and avoid diving into shallow waters. With these practices, the risk of drowning can be significantly reduced.
