Mission, B.C. Homicide Charges Raise Safety Questions After Disappearance of Burnaby Man

Two people have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Masood Masjoody, a 45-year-old Burnaby man whose remains were found in the Mission, British Columbia area on March 6, 2026, about a month after he was reported missing.

According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and the RCMP, Masjoody was reported missing on February 2, 2026. Investigators say the killing was a targeted incident and is not believed to be related to gangs or extortion.

Arrests and charges

Mehdi Ahmadzadeh Razavi, 48, of Maple Ridge, and Arezou Soltani, 45, of North Vancouver, were arrested on March 13, 2026. Each is charged with one count of first-degree murder. Both remained in custody after an initial court appearance in mid-March.

The charges have not been proven in court.

IHIT says Masjoody and the accused were known to each other. The motive remains under active investigation. Officials have noted that neither of the accused has a known history of criminal convictions in Canada.

The investigation

After Masjoody was reported missing, he was flagged as being at risk under suspicious circumstances. Over several weeks, IHIT and partner agencies searched multiple locations of interest before his remains were found in Mission on March 6.

Masjoody had been publicly involved in activism related to events in Iran, and his disappearance drew concern within the Iranian-Canadian community in Metro Vancouver. Police have acknowledged that the case generated widespread concern. Investigators previously said they were examining whether his activism had any connection to his disappearance, but as of the latest updates, no motive has been confirmed.

Because the incident is described as targeted and involving people who knew each other, police say there is no indication of a random attacker at large in Mission, Burnaby or neighbouring communities.

As of the latest information, the investigation is ongoing and no further charges or details about a motive have been released. IHIT has encouraged anyone with information about the case to come forward.
