The Crime Canada newsroom
Crime Canada reports are published under the newsroom byline. This page explains who we are, where our information comes from and how it is checked.
Who we are
Crime Canada is an independent Canadian publisher of crime news, police alerts, crime statistics and plain-language guides to criminal law. The newsroom is based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, and covers every province and territory in English and French.
We are not a police service, a government agency or a law firm. The free consultation offered on some pages is provided by independent criminal defence lawyers, not by the newsroom.
Where our reports come from
Every news report and alert starts from an official source: a release from a Canadian police service or the RCMP, a court decision, or a government notice. The release is linked at the end of the report, so readers can check every fact.
Crime rates and the Crime Severity Index come from Statistics Canada. Explanations of offences and procedure come from the Criminal Code and other federal and provincial laws as published on government sites.
How a report is checked before it is published
Charges are reported as laid and described as allegations; everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. We do not name youths charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, victims of sexual offences, or anyone protected by a publication ban. Photos are police-released images only, with credit.
Missing-person and wanted alerts are updated when police announce that a person was located or arrested, and each change is dated on the page.
Corrections and removal requests
If something we published is wrong or out of date, use the "Report a problem" form on the page or write to us. Corrections are made promptly and noted on the page.
