CrimeCanada.ca Safety Perspective

From the perspective of CrimeCanada.ca, this alert highlights the importance of community awareness around offences involving harassment, threats, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. These are often targeted crimes that can cause serious emotional, psychological, and reputational harm to victims, both in larger centres like St. John’s and in smaller communities across Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada.

Our mission is to support safer communities by helping residents stay informed and engaged with local public safety issues. While overall crime levels vary between communities (for example, smaller towns in Newfoundland and Labrador such as those reflected in regional data like the Dover, Newfoundland and Labrador crime statistics and safety data), harassment and technology-facilitated abuse can occur anywhere. We encourage residents to:

  • Report threatening or harassing messages, calls, or online conduct to police promptly.
  • Never share or forward intimate images without clear, ongoing consent.
  • Document concerning communications (screenshots, call logs, message histories) in case police need them as evidence.
  • Use privacy settings and safety tools on phones and social media to reduce exposure to unwanted contact.

Community members who stay informed, recognize early warning signs, and report concerns help create a safer environment for everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador.
