Police share home security advice

Police said they continue to see a pattern of residential break-ins targeting homes that back onto greenspaces, trails, parks or wooded areas.

They recommend locking doors and windows, including while at home, installing an audible alarm and using surveillance cameras at the front and rear of the property. For properties backing onto greenspace, trails, parks or wooded areas, police also suggest considering trail cameras.

Residents going away for extended periods can notify trusted neighbours and arrange for someone to check on their home, police said. They also advise reporting suspicious people or vehicles.

Police reminded residents about CamSafe, a voluntary program for registering security cameras. Investigators can contact registered camera owners to request footage following a crime or public safety concern, but police do not have direct access to the cameras.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can contact the BEAR Unit at 519-570-9777, extension 8255. The file number is WA26160254.
