An 18-year-old man had his licence suspended and his vehicle seized after police clocked him at 157 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Grand Falls-Windsor area on Thursday morning, according to the RCMP.

Motorists reported erratic driving

Police said several drivers on the Trans-Canada Highway called in shortly after 10:30 a.m. on October 29 to report an eastbound vehicle moving at high speed and driving erratically.

Officers with RCMP Traffic Services Central found the vehicle that matched the description. Radar confirmed it was travelling at 157 km/h, 57 km/h over the posted limit of 100 km/h, police said.

Ticket, suspension and impound

Officers stopped the vehicle. The driver, an 18-year-old man, was ticketed for excessive speed, according to the RCMP. His licence was suspended at the roadside, and police seized and impounded the vehicle he was driving.

Police warning on speed

In the release, the RCMP described excessive speed as one of the most common contributors to serious and fatal crashes. Police noted that speeding can lead to fines or the loss of a licence or vehicle, but warned of much worse outcomes.

"The extra minute or two that you might save by speeding is simply not worth it."

The RCMP said its officers carry out proactive patrols on roads across Newfoundland and Labrador, looking for dangerous driving, speeding, impairment and other common factors in serious collisions. Officers are also checking seatbelt use and making sure vehicles and drivers are operating safely and have the proper documents, police said.
