The Independent Investigations Office of BC has concluded that police actions or inaction were not connected to the death of a man in the Fernie area in July 2026. The man was found dead in the Elk River near Morrisey on July 11, the office said.
According to the IIO, a member of the public found the man, prompting a call to the Elk Valley RCMP. The BC Coroners Service reported the death to the police oversight agency.
The man had been reported missing on June 20, 2026. The IIO said it confirmed he had an earlier interaction with police in Fernie on that same date and then began an investigation into his death.
The agency’s chief civilian director reviewed evidence gathered by investigators, including witness accounts, police reports and medical information. The director determined there was no connection between police actions or inaction and the man’s death.
The IIO said its investigation is now concluded. The case is identified as IIO file 2026-160.
The office is an independent civilian agency that oversees police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing.
