A 32-year-old Lewisporte driver has been charged with impaired driving after a traffic stop near the community on Nov. 5, and his 26-year-old passenger faces charges including assaulting a police officer, the RCMP said. Both men were arrested during the Thursday night stop.
Lewisporte RCMP said police conducted a proactive traffic stop on Route 341, outside Stanhope. The driver showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside breath test, according to police.
Police said the driver was arrested for impaired operation and taken to the detachment for further testing. That testing confirmed impairment at two and a half times the legal limit, according to the RCMP.

He is scheduled to appear in Gander Provincial Court in February 2027 on charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation while equal to or over 80 mg%.
The passenger, also a Lewisporte man, was arrested during the stop for obstructing the officer and resisting arrest, police said. He faces Criminal Code charges of obstruction, resisting arrest and assault against a police officer.
The RCMP asks anyone who suspects someone is driving while impaired to call 911 immediately to make a report.
