A 28-year-old Sunshine Coast man had his vehicle impounded for 30 days and lost his licence for 90 days after driving into the back of a police vehicle at a drive-through in Sechelt early on November 1, 2026, according to the Sunshine Coast RCMP.

Police said members of the BC Highway Patrol went to the drive-through at 5615 Sunshine Coast Highway at about 2:00 a.m. to assist with an impaired driving investigation. The RCMP described the man as an impaired driver who was dressed as a Disney character for Halloween and said he was after a late-night snack.

The collision happened at slow speed, and police said neither the RCMP officer nor the driver was injured.

Busy Halloween weekend on the Sunshine Coast

The crash was one of many interactions during two days of traffic enforcement on the Sunshine Coast over the Halloween weekend. According to the RCMP, BC Highway Patrol officers handed out:

  • 7 roadside prohibitions for impaired driving
  • 17 violation tickets for driving without vehicle insurance
  • 27 tickets for various other driving offences

Police also said a Vancouver Island man was arrested on an unendorsed warrant.

Speeding car and motorcycle impounded

In one case, police said a vehicle passed a marked police vehicle while travelling 44 km/h over the speed limit. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was ticketed for excessive speeding.

In another, a motorcycle cut off a marked police vehicle. Police said the rider had no driver's licence and no insurance, and provided two breath samples that registered a "Fail" reading. The motorcycle was impounded for 30 days and the rider received multiple violation tickets.

More enforcement ahead of the holidays

With the holiday season approaching, the RCMP said residents can expect a greater police presence on local roads, as the Sunshine Coast RCMP and BC Highway Patrol target impaired and unsafe drivers.
