Bay St. George RCMP warned on November 5 that people across Canada are receiving calls from fraudsters impersonating police in Stephenville. The calls appear to come from the local detachment’s main number, (709) 643-2118, police said.
According to the RCMP, callers claim to work with the force and tell recipients they are victims of fraud or cybercrime. Police said the callers are trying to obtain personal, financial and other sensitive information.
The RCMP advised anyone who receives a call asking for personal or financial information not to give out details. Instead, hang up and contact your local police detachment immediately to report the incident.

Previous scam attempts
Police said that in similar previous scams, callers asked people to verify financial information by email. The email addresses used a [email protected] format, which the RCMP said is not a legitimate address for the force.
Police cautioned against sending personal, credit card or banking details in response to unsolicited messages, including messages from someone claiming to be with law enforcement.
The RCMP said it will never ask people to transfer money, provide remote access to a computer or provide personal information through text or email. That information includes names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email and street addresses, and banking details.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call or email from someone claiming to be an RCMP officer should contact their local detachment to confirm it or make a report, police said. If it is a call, hang up immediately.
