Hay River RCMP Operation Leads to Firearms and Drug Charges

On the afternoon of April 20, 2026, officers from the Hay River RCMP executed a major police response following a report that a firearm had been pointed at a person inside a residence on Pine Crescent in Hay River, Northwest Territories. The individual who reported the incident was allegedly assaulted but was able to flee the home without physical injury, while the suspect and several other people remained inside the residence.

Police quickly secured the area and called in specialized units, including an Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Police Dog Services, and a Critical Incident Commander, supported by additional general duty officers. Eight people were taken into custody during the operation. Seven of those detained, who were determined not to be involved in the alleged offences, were later released without charge.

Following the police operation and search, 30-year-old Malik Shaw of Edmonton, Alberta was arrested and charged in relation to the incident.

• Pointing a firearm, contrary to section 87(1) of the Criminal Code
• Uttering threats, contrary to section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88(1) of the Criminal Code
• Using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, contrary to section 85(2)(a) of the Criminal Code
• Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code
• Assault while choking, contrary to section 267(c) of the Criminal Code
• Two (2) counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
• Two (2) counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

Malik Shaw was held for a bail hearing and has been remanded into custody. According to the RCMP, this incident is believed to be connected to the illicit drug trade in Hay River. The investigation remains active.
