On the evening of May 31, 2026, officers responded to a residential fire on Hwy. 16 in Upper Big Tracadie, where a deceased man was later found on the property. On June 2, 2026, the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service determined that the man’s death was the result of homicide. Investigators are also examining four additional fires reported between late May 31 and the early hours of June 1 in Upper Big Tracadie, Mulgrave, and Havre Boucher, all considered suspicious and potentially linked to the homicide.

According to the official RCMP update, the investigation began after a structure fire on Hwy. 16 in Upper Big Tracadie:
- May 31, ~8:25 p.m. – Antigonish County District RCMP responded to a report of a residential fire in the 0–1000 block of Hwy. 16, Upper Big Tracadie. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, officers located a deceased man on the property.
- June 2 – The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service confirmed the manner of death as homicide.
Between the evening of May 31 and the early morning of June 1, RCMP, fire services, and the Office of the Fire Marshal responded to four additional fires. All have been deemed suspicious, and investigators are assessing possible links to the homicide:
- A second residential fire in the 0–1000 block of Hwy. 16, Upper Big Tracadie, reported at approximately 9:25 p.m. on May 31.
- An apartment complex fire on Tower Rd., Mulgrave, reported at approximately 11:20 p.m. on May 31. Some residents of this property suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were assessed by EHS and taken to hospital as needed.
- A fire at an abandoned residence in the 1000 block of Havre Boucher Rd., Havre Boucher, reported around midnight.
- A fire at a lot in another section of Havre Boucher Rd., Havre Boucher.
Investigators believe both the homicide and the fires were targeted incidents. RCMP have reviewed whether there might be a connection to the May 21 homicide in West Arm Tracadie, but they report finding no evidence linking the two cases. The investigations are being treated as separate files.
Public Assistance Requested – Vehicles and Video Footage
The RCMP is actively requesting help from the public in Antigonish County and Guysborough County. Officers are specifically seeking video footage from the timeframe spanning the evening of May 31 through the early hours of June 1.
If you have surveillance, dashcam, or doorbell camera footage from anywhere in Antigonish or Guysborough counties during that period, investigators want to review it for sightings of the following vehicles:
- Black 2014 Chevrolet Sonic with pink spray paint.
- Silver 2010 Hyundai Accent with a temporary permit.
RCMP report that the spray-painted Chevrolet Sonic has already been located and seized as part of the investigation. The second vehicle remains a key focus for investigators.
