Warning in effect

On November 6, 2026, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary warned of a cross-Canada phone scam involving callers posing as officers in Labrador West. The warning was issued in Labrador City after police received multiple reports from people outside the province.

The RNC said the reports involved calls from 709-944-3405. That number was formerly associated with the officer in charge of the Labrador City detachment, according to police.

During the calls, the person on the line says police have someone in custody. The caller then gives the recipient directions in an attempt to obtain more information, the RNC said.

What to do

Police advise anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be in law enforcement and seeking personal or financial information to end the conversation. They should then contact their local police service directly.

The RNC said law enforcement agencies and public officials would never demand money by phone as part of a judicial or investigative process.

Police also caution against trusting a number simply because it looks local or familiar. Fraudsters can use technology to disguise their actual contact information, according to the RNC.

To report suspicious activity, call the RNC at 709-729-8000. Fraudulent or scam calls can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
