RCMP Lay Multiple Property Crime Charges After Chilliwack Break-ins

Following a focused investigation into a surge of property crime in May 2026, Chilliwack RCMP have confirmed that multiple charges have been approved against a 33-year-old man in connection with residential break and enters, vehicle thefts, and related offences across Chilliwack, British Columbia. The investigation stems from a series of incidents reported between May 3 and May 15, 2026, involving stolen vehicles, break-ins, and fraudulent use of bank cards.
Police report that all vehicles stolen during these incidents were recovered in Chilliwack on the same day they were reported. One suspect was located inside a recovered vehicle while allegedly impaired, and stolen bank cards from affected homes were later used for fraudulent purchases. A targeted investigation by the Chilliwack RCMP Priority Target Team has now resulted in numerous criminal charges, and the accused remains in custody pending a future court appearance.

According to Chilliwack RCMP (File # 2026-18044), officers noted an uptick in residential property offences in early May 2026, including home break-ins and vehicles being taken from driveways and residential properties. Reported incidents include:
- May 3–15, 2026: Vehicles stolen from residences on Midtown Way, Spadina Avenue, and Angus Drive. Each stolen vehicle was located and recovered by police in Chilliwack the same day it was reported missing.
- The vehicle taken from Angus Drive was found with a male occupant inside who was allegedly showing signs of impairment.
- Bank cards believed to have been stolen from homes on Midtown Way and Spadina Avenue were later used for several fraudulent transactions within the Chilliwack area.
- May 6–7, 2026: Residential break and enters reported on Linwood Street and Quarry Road, where in both cases the homeowners’ vehicles were also reported stolen. Both vehicles were recovered by police the same day they were reported stolen.
- May 13, 2026: An attempted residential break and enter on Evans Road resulted in damage to a vehicle on the property. The suspect left the area before officers arrived, and nothing was taken from the residence.
Through crime linkage analysis, the Chilliwack RCMP Priority Target Team (PTT), with assistance from Chilliwack RCMP Frontline officers, identified a suspect and launched a focused investigation. Based on evidence gathered, the BC Prosecution Service has approved the following charges against 33-year-old Stephan Hibak:
- Criminal Code s. 320.14(1)(a) – Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
- Criminal Code s. 320.15(1) – Refusal to comply with breath demand
- Criminal Code s. 333.1 (x2) – Theft of motor vehicle
- Criminal Code s. 334(b) – Theft under $5,000
- Criminal Code s. 342(1) (x5) – Unauthorized use of credit card
- Criminal Code s. 348(1)(b) – Break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence
- Criminal Code s. 355 – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Criminal Code s. 355(a) (x2) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Criminal Code s. 380(1)(b) – Fraud under $5,000
- Criminal Code s. 430(4) – Mischief under $5,000
Stephan Hibak has been arrested and is currently in custody awaiting his next court appearance.
