Official Incident Details
According to Prince District RCMP, with support from RCMP Police Dog Services and the Joint Forces Operations team, officers carried out a search warrant at a home in Elmsdale, PEI. During the search, police located several partially intact firearms inside the residence.
Officers also searched an outdoor shed on the same property, where they discovered an improvised trap mechanism. Police state this device was configured in a way that was intended, or likely, to cause serious bodily harm to anyone who triggered it.
The RCMP National Weapons Enforcement Support Team examined two of the weapons recovered and determined that they were:
- a .22-calibre long gun; and
- a 12-gauge shotgun that had its barrel cut down and its serial number altered.
Because of its modifications, the 12-gauge shotgun is classified as a prohibited firearm under Canadian law.

Police have arrested Clint David Hardy in connection with this investigation. He is facing the following charges:
- Two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm
- Unsafe storage of firearms

CrimeCanada.ca Safety Perspective
From the perspective of CrimeCanada.ca, this incident highlights several serious public safety concerns for residents of Prince Edward Island. Unlawfully held or modified firearms, especially prohibited weapons with tampered serial numbers, are difficult to trace and can be used in further criminal activity. The discovery of an improvised trap device capable of causing severe harm also poses a direct risk not only to targeted individuals, but to family members, visitors, first responders, and neighbours who might unknowingly encounter such a device.
Community members can support safer neighbourhoods by promptly reporting suspicious weapons activity to police—such as the sound of gunfire in residential areas, known storage of firearms in unsafe conditions, or improvised devices around properties that appear designed to injure intruders. If you ever come across a suspected trap, firearm, or weapons component, do not touch or move it. Leave the area immediately and contact local police so trained officers can respond safely. Together, consistent reporting and targeted enforcement help reduce gun-related risks and maintain the overall safety profile of communities across the province.
